The Challenger (Archetype)

The Challenger archetype pushes back on your narrative, calls out blind spots, and asks uncomfortable questions. Challengers care about your success enough to risk awkwardness — they're not skeptics for sport.

Many boards lack Challengers because we unconsciously recruit people who like us. Without one, you get consensus that feels good but fails in the market. Challengers might be former bosses, tough clients, or friends with high standards.

To use a Challenger well, signal that you want direct truth, not comfort. Don't punish honesty defensively. Document their critiques in a decision journal and revisit outcomes — it builds trust and shows you weren't seeking validation only.
