The Sage (Archetype)

The Sage archetype is the seasoned expert — often 15–20+ years in your field — who has seen cycles, mistakes, and recoveries. Sages provide pattern recognition: "This reminds me of when…" and "Here's what usually breaks at your stage."

Sages are not oracles. Their experience can bias toward past playbooks that no longer apply. Your role is to extract principles, not copy decisions blindly. Come prepared with context so they can diagnose, not guess.

Boards overweight Sages because they're flattering and credible. Balance Sages with Peers and Challengers so you don't only hear how things used to work. Refresh Sage relationships when you pivot industry or role — legacy expertise may not transfer.
